For the foodie
Where to stay
The centres of the foodie Lake District are without question Cartmel and Grasmere which both boast Michelin starred restaurants that any food lover will surely be dying to visit. If Cartmel sounds familiar to you, it’s because it is. Some say that it is the world-famous Sticky Toffee Pudding that first put Cartmel on the foodie map. First launched in Cartmel Village shop it is now world famous and adored by many top chefs.
What to do
If you’re a big foodie, it’s probable that your main priority will be paying a visit to a Michelin starred restaurant or famous food market. You’ve likely heard of L’Enclume; Cumbria’s only two Michelin starred restaurant. The high-end restaurant is well in demand, so if you are looking to get a booking at the Cartmel restaurant you would have to book months in advance. Cartmel isn’t the Lake Districts only foodie destination; Grasmere is home to its own Michelin starred restaurant, The Forest Side which uses the freshest, locally sourced seasonal produce.
For the adventurer
Where to stay
The National Trust was born in the Lake District, so it is definitely a hotspot for the adventurer. One of the top choices if you’re a lover of the outdoors is Windermere; it is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in the Lake District especially for those who love a bit of adventure in their lives.
What to do
There are more unusual places to visit such as the 30ft Bower Stone, a chunk of volcanic rock with steps so visitors can climb to the top if they wish. If you’re staying in Windermere, or even just visiting, you can take the Windermere Lake Cruise which allows you to admire England’s largest natural lake from the water.
For the wanderer
Where to stay
Walking is seen as the number one thing to do when you visit the Lake District, as it is blessed with a variety of walks across the region. Ullswater is a great place to stay to experience delightful walking trails, with a relatively new route; the Ullswater way offering new views on its 20-mile circuit. The Western Lakes are well known for their breath-taking views and are home to England’s tallest peak; Scafell Pike.
What to do
There are the classic walks such as Great Gable and Wansfell Pike which offer guaranteed views, but for a quieter trail and gentle walking consider embarking on walks in the Northern Lakes of Loweswater or Buttermere.
No matter your interests, the Lake District has plenty to offer for all; with a little preparation and research you will be able to ensure a well-deserved luxury getaway free of stress but full of fun and adventure.
